Elf Sculpture in Progess Updated

Good Morning! I am putting off working on a HUGE paper I have due this week by blogging about my little elf. I have been studying different artists and their unique styles and I am drawn to those pieces that show life, movement, and personality. I really wanted this elf to have a playful, mischievous air and have a lot of life and movement and I'm happy so far!

I spent a lot of time last night trying to paint the intricate details on the face. It isn't easy to paint teeth after they have lips sculpted over them! But painting is one of my favorite parts so I didn't mind. In the picture here, he is propped up with his head drying onto his body, attached with an Apoxie Sculpt collar. I'll have to let him dry for most of the day before I can do anything else, but I really want to make sure that his head is secure on his body and that the piece balances on the platform where he doesn't tip over.

The second pic is of my experiment with making faux glass eyes. I bought a pair of German glass eyes for my lady caroler (a previous post) and they were really expensive. I LOVE the effect though. So it is my goal to recreate that look using clay and glazes. Here is attempt #1. I still have work to do but I have some ideas that I think will work.

The third pic is just a typical glass-ball lady in progress. I don't know her story yet... I will have to see what the clay tells me when I start on her head!

Tonight I am going to "First Friday" (in downtown Knoxville) where all the local artists bring their work to display. When I come home, I always carry with me the feeling that I don't measure up and I usually lay around in the fetal position for an hour (or day) but it is good for me because it pushes me to be better and we all need that push!

Have a great Friday and I'll see you tomorrow (maybe with an update of what I've seen out tonight!)

Renee :)

Those eyes look pretty good! Maybe you could perfect the process and sell a few in your ETSY shop (hint, hint)

:D

Hmmm.... Robin you may be on to something! I am going to try to "perfect" the process later. I think I know exactly what I need to do!

I definitely think your eyes have it. You gonna make some $$, girl!

Renee, I should think that once you have your booth open at First Friday (in Austin we have our First Thutsday,) you will send everybody else home to curl up fetally!

(And I knew you were shaping this elf after me!)

Ha! Jannie you just say that because my people are starting to look like you... hee hee....

I don't know if I would ever have the confidence to have a booth. I've never even done a craft show. I get bashful about my work. Thank goodness for the internet or I'd be setting around the house chatting with my thousands of dolls!

Your dolls are wonderful and you are very talented. I see no reason for you to compare yourself to others and feel less than. You should try selling (in a booth) some time. The social part of these events is the best, both with customers and other artists.

Sounds like you might be on to something, too, with your eyes. You just may end up being the go-to person when people need them for their creations.

Think confidence! :)

That man has no arms. Hmm...he wouldn't be able to raid my refrigerator or switch on football on tv. He'd have to let me drive. If he also had no mouth, I might marry him!

(you have Miss Funster to blame for my presence here. if it were me, I would press charges.)

You mean it might not be okay to sit around the house talking to dolls??

Hmmn, do I need to rethink my constant doll chats?

Jannie, heck no! Keep talking to those dolls! Mine tell me how pretty and smart I am and in return I promise not to sculpt them with big butts....
